YOUR CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE FOR FEBRUARY 2016

Denis Mullan - Chairman of Bristol Real Tennis ClubWe had a very busy month of January, with lots of activity particularly at weekends. This included home matches against Hyde, the LRTA, and Middlesex, together with hosting the Boasters Weekend, and the Hangover doubles and Ton Up doubles events. Looking forward in February, the main event is the forthcoming 30th Anniversary Tennis Fiesta, from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th. This culminates in a Curry Supper, with presentations and entertainment on the Sunday evening. If you haven’t already, do enter the competitions and/or put your name down for the supper. It should be a fun and entertaining fiesta. On Saturday 20 February, we are holding the Ron Brown Trophy competition, a level singles event for lady members and on Sunday the 28th a medal day for handicaps between 36 and 45. And as always, February has the enjoyable Monday club nights and Wednesday club nights. Please enter whichever are relevant to you, and come along and support them too. On a more subdued note, with the age profile of our current membership, with many members in their late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, we experience continuing pressure on maintaining court usage and on retaining and increasing membership numbers. Many of those members are giving up playing singles and are switching to only playing doubles. And even worse, some are giving up altogether and are retiring from the game and the club. So we remain under constant pressure to maintain our membership levels, let alone increase them, and to increase our court usage too. Therefore I continue to challenge all of you to introduce your friends, relatives, acquaintances and neighbours to the club and this wonderful game. I must also encourage all of you, who are fit and able, to play more often. Last year, I coined the slogan “One more hour per month per member” to inspire all of us to play that little bit extra. Thank you to those that have done so, and I would encourage you again to continue in that vein as it will make such a difference. I will give an up to date presentation on the year just ended at the BRTC AGM on Wednesday 20 April, at the club at 6.30pm. Please note the date and time in your diary and come along. Best wishes, Denis... read more
